When I saw Aliens at 12, I went, "Wow, I can't believe women can do this." That's what I was raised on. How did landing that role influence your post-Leeloo acting career? As an actor, I have a great short term memory - I can memorize a lot of things quickly, then forget it quickly. He had been working on it for many, many years. We would write each other letters in the language, so I was getting used to communication and speaking it. I don't want to take any credit - Luc had a whole language figured out. How did you learn the 400-word Divine Language that Luc developed? She's one of those characters that stays with people. The Fifth Element was one of her favorite movies when she was five and six. Leeloo is definitely one of the most amazing characters I've ever seen on screen. It really added to my work ethic, which was instilled in me as a kid, and when I met Luc, I felt like he reflected that same work ethic that my parents had. To prepare for that character is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
On a personal level, The Fifth Element was such a life-changing experience as a person and as an actress. What does Leeloo mean to you 20 years later?
Over the phone from her house in Los Angeles, she talks to us about two decades of playing badass women, the magical quality of sci-fi, and why modeling has always been about more than being a pretty face.
